Fiber Causing Constipation Constipation refers to the difficulty in passing stools. It causes pain, embarrassment and even serious damage to the intestine. There are some foods that relieve constipation. On the other hand some foods promote constipation. Diet high in animal fats, food low in fiber and refined sugar are considered major foodstuffs causing constipation.

Some low fiber foods that must be avoided are ice creams, cheese, meat, chips, pizza, and processed foods like mashed potatoes or frozen dinners. Foods like almonds, dried apricots, beans, celery, coconut, raisins, dates, figs, grapes, mangoes, olive, papayas, parsley, pineapple, prunes, soybeans, turnips, and green vegetables have laxative effects and helps in natural treatment of constipation.

For breakfast you may prefer prune juice, oatmeal, shredded wheat, whole wheat toast or raisin bran. For snacks you may consider yogurt, raisins, fig newton cookies, apple, rhubarb or cherry pie. Taking extra fiber in your diet is believed to prevent or relieve constipation problems. As fiber is not digested by the human body, it passes through the digestive system unchanged. Once it reaches the colon, it provides roughage that helps clean the colon walls. This roughage, or cleaning action, helps the colon muscles to move other solid waste materials through the entire length of the colon, and dispose of it through bowel movements. Fiber can also be included in your diet in the form of nuts, seeds, and herbal supplements.

Foods that promote bowel movement are cabbage, papaya, peas, black sesame seed, coconut, sweet potato, asparagus, bran from oats and castor oil. Drink plenty of liquids, at least 8 glasses a day.

too much fibre causes constipation?
Okay, well the cereal I'm eating has about 11g of fiber in 1/2 a cup, and I've noticed that my stool is really hard and round now, not long and thin. Is it possible that too much fibre in one sitting could do that?

Eating TOO MUCH fiber cause constipation?
Hi, I've been on a strict regiment of eating health-organic foods. Mostly, they Trader Joe products which contain a lot of fibers such as Whole Wheat Naan (bread), Whole Wheat Pita, Whole Wheat English Muffin, Soy Cheese, [...] all and everything that's doesn't have meat products in it basically. As well as Clif Bars, Slim Fast meal-on-the-go shakes and 1 can (16oz) of Sugar-free Rockstar energy drink as a daily meal plan. All the foods I've listed contain a fiber content of 10% and the Clif Bars for sure contain 20% - which I eat minimum of 3 daily. I exercise daily on the evenings and drink a moderate amount of water but my lifestyle is stationary since I'm a full-time college student. My question is, can eating too much fiber cause a lack of bowel movement? or is it my lack of movement around my book-worm life? I just feel like my bowel feels light in load as I eat a lot of fiber rich foods.

Can too much fibre cause constipation?
I eat a low carb diet rich in fats proteins and vegetables, mostly raw. I drink plenty of water and artificially sweetened sweetened drinks, little coffee and very little alcohol. Last weekend I was extremely constipated - was in the er because I couldn't urinate I was so bunged up. The doc and nurses couldn't give me any answers because my diet seemed fine. I'm hesitant to take fibre as a supplement becasue I thought my diet was fine. Was this just a freak occurance? I'm almost 33 and have never been constipated before. Any suggestions besides the obvious flax seeds and dried prunes (which I actually like, but they're high in sugar) I've heard that about cheese too. I don't eat a lot, maybe the equivelent of what would be on a slice of pizza on average per day. I've definetly eaten a lot more than than and never had a problem. I forgot to mention that I was on antibiotics a few weeks ago. I've been off them for 2 weeks and been eating yogurt to replace the bacteria. Could a lack of bacteria cause constipation? Cause this was serious - exlax, mineral oil and glyceric suppository did nothing!!! It's one thing to be constipated - it's another when you can't urinate because of it.
