Constipation In Toddlers

Causes Of Constipation In Toddlers

The cause of constipation in toddlers is usually different than what causes constipation in older children. Most older children get constipated because they avoid using the bathroom while in school. Constipation In Toddlers can be caused by many different things. Here are 5 of the most common causes of constipation in toddlers.

The most general cause of constipation in toddlers is a change in their diets. Many toddlers, as babies, feed off their mother's breast milk. A mother's breast milk is easily digestible to a baby's small tummy so when a toddler is switched over to solid foods, constipation usually occurs.

Another frequent cause of Constipation In Toddlers is formula. Many people believe that the iron level in formula causes this Constipation In Toddlers but this is not true. Constipation from drinking formula can be caused by allergies to certain types of formula based milk.

Constipation in toddlers can also be caused by solid foods. If the proper balance of fiber is not included in their diet, than constipation can happen. To avoid this constipation in toddlers give them a well balanced meal that includes lots of whole grain fiber foods.

Another common cause of constipation in toddlers is dehydration. When your toddler is not getting enough fluids, their body will draw liquid from whatever they are eating resulting in very hard stool. Make sure to give your toddler at least one cup of water a day.

Constipation in toddlers can also be due to a medical condition called hypothyroidism. This is a condition when the thyroid gland does not produce a sufficient amount of the thyroid hormone. Hirschsprung's disease is also a condition that can cause constipation in toddlers but it is usually diagnosed when a baby is first born.

Constipation in toddlers can be caused by any one or all of these problems. Some times constipation in toddlers can be due to them being potty trained at that time. Some toddlers have a fear of using the toilet for a variety of reasons. If you notice your child expressing pain while trying to pass a bowel movement, you can use Vaseline to make the stool pass through easier.

Constipation in Toddler?
My 3 yr old son may be constipated and I was wondering if anyone knew of any home remedies that we could try. Something that will work quickly and painlessly would be the best. Also, he is experiencing some nausea too. Thanks in advance.

Can soy products cause constipation in toddlers?
My daughter is 16 months. She attends an in-home daycare, where my provider has recently started giving all the children soy milk since two new children are being raised vegetarian by their parents. It seems that within this same timeframe, my daughter has started having very painful and hard bowel movements. She stands up on her tiptoes, grabs onto whatever she can, sometimes bites into her hand, and screams and cries trying to have a bowel movement. It makes my husband and I cry and feel utterly helpless. Stool softeners, laxatives, anti-gas medicines, increased water, fruits and vegetables have not helped. And she doesn't do this everyday, maybe just for a day or two, then she seems normal again. Has anyone had this experience and have any advice? Do I need to tell my daycare provider not to give my daughter soy milk and "meatless" products?

Constipation in toddler?
My daughter was 6lbs 8.5 oz and 19 1/2 inches long when she was born. She was breasfed for 13 months. When she was 6 months old, she went 13 days without having a bowel movement. It was about 5 1/2 months when we first introduced rice cereal. Her then pediatrician said 13 days was normal for a breasfed baby to not have a bm. However, my daughter seemed miserble. She has had a chronic problem ever since. Her doctor put her on Miralax and she did good. She was able to stop using it. She went for about 2 months with no problems. She wasn't taking the Miralax, but she was doing fine. Then, all the sudden she was constipated again. But this last time, her bm looked very odd. A very light tan color, but full of dark specks. I couldn't think of anything she ate that would make it look like that. It is hard and difficult for her to pass. Sometimes it is has blood on it. This last time it was covered in green mucous. Her doctor says constipation in children is rarely from anything serious. But, I am worried. They haven't done any testing at all. Is it possible that she may have a food intolerance? Or could something else be wrong? She has a very good diet. Lots of fruits and vegetables and only whole grains. She is 25 months and weighs 22 lbs. When she was younger she was diagnosed failure to thrive until they watched her growth curve. Then they said she would just be small. But the weight gain issues didn't start until after the constipation started. I am really worried that they might be missing something. She also has eczema. But otherwise she is healthy, happy and very energetic! Thank you. She is no longer considered failure to thrive. But she is in the 5th % for weight. This is her second doctor. I have already switched once.
