Chronic Constipation In Parkinson's Patients

Chronic Constipation Remedy Parkinson's disease can lead to many secondary health complications in the adult who has been diagnosed with the age-related disorder. As the aging population continues to rise, the number of adults treating for Parkinson's is likely to increase and so to will the treatment for secondary health complications in response to PD. If you are caring for a loved one who has been diagnosed with Parkinson's disease, it is important to become familiar with the secondary health complications that so often affect this set group of patients.

Chronic constipation is a common health concern for adults with Parkinson's disease. While most complications with constipation arise out of a side effect of medications, there are some PD patients who develop chronic constipation due to poor diet and lack of exercise attributed to the Parkinson's condition. To first remedy the complications with chronic constipation in the Parkinson's patient, it is important to maintain a healthy diet and try to assist your loved one in getting as much physical exercise as possible.

Beyond diet and exercise, play close attention to medication and track the bowel movements of your loved one. Most Parkinson's patients, when asked, will report they have severe abdominal pain weekly and may often go three or more days without experiencing a bowel movement. Even when a bowel movement occurs, it may take longer than 30 minutes for the process to take place - something that any caretaker should notice when caring for a loved one with Parkinson's disease.

In addition to medications, there may also be some physiological changes that are contributing to chronic constipation, in particular the development of dystonia. When dystonia becomes more apparent, many Parkinson's disease patients will report they are experiencing complications with obstruction for which a proctologist may need to be consulted. Because dopamine plays a role in the defecation process, when Parkinson's develops, these neuron receptors in the colon are diminished, leading to complications with constipation as well.

With proper diet, exercise, medication management, and the use of a well specialized proctologist, many Parkinson's patients can overcome chronic constipation and lead to a healthier lifestyle. The first challenge, however, is determine what the underlying cause and origin of constipation may be and then finding the ways in which to effectively gain control over normal bowel movements for the Parkinson's patient. Early diagnosis is key to living a healthy and somewhat normal life with Parkinson's disease.
